Company: The Mechanical Zoo (www.themechanicalzoo.com)

The Mechanical Zoo is home to a new type of search that makes it easy to find subjective information. Starting in early 2008 the company raised seed financing from a number of premier angel investors and carefully grew a high-caliber engineering team. Today, the company includes founders from more than a half-dozen successful startups, four AI Ph.D.s, and engineers from Silicon Valley's major technology companies.

Because we're in early stages, we can't share more details of our products in this posting, but will provide in-depth demonstrations and alpha testing accounts to qualified applicants.

Role: Software Engineer - Systems

The Mechanical Zoo engineers are careful implementers who are curious about how things work. They lean on large levers to get more done, faster, and enjoy applying new tools to the new opportunities afforded by today's web. They endeavor to solve real-world problems for real people (including the rest of the company), and aren't afraid to think big. As a systems engineer, you bring strong technical chops and a desire to think big and build our systems to match.

General requirements:

  • B.S. in CS or Computer engineering from a leading institution (M.S. preferred)
  • 2+ years direct technical experience in Systems Engineering for web-based products with experience in distributed systems, network programming, database implementation, web search infrastructure, or storage systems in Java, C++, or a similar language
  • Proven ability to deliver end-to-end systems under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Affinity for rapid prototyping
  • Flexibility when faced with complex challenges

WHY THIS IS A COOL JOB
This is not the type of job where you bat PRDs around all day in the name of development! You will not be hiding in a back room, fiddling with a red stapler. You will be in an open seating environment next to store managers and business owners, honing an iterative approach to feature-development in response to live data. You will be involved from the first conception of new features through each iteration, so expect to get your fingers dirty.

We're no fly-by-nighter; you'll get the full benefits shebang, including health, vision, dental, LTD coverage- all paid-in-full, a 401K plan, and 3 weeks of paid leave. Certain things about a dotcom don't change: you can look forward to snacks of dubious provenance, wickedly strong coffee, and random pizza parties. We like to have fun.

WHY YOU ARE A COOL CANDIDATE
You might have E-commerce experience; an open-source LAMP stack is probably second nature to you. Bonus points if:
    • You think "The Pragmatic Programmer" covers all the basis of good engineering but "Getting Real" adds the attitude.
    • For you, agility is not just a way to avoid documentation but a way to get more things done.
    • You love LAMP - from database, over PHP to deployment it is all about making things work.
    • You love the Internet! Include your five favorite Web sites in your cover letter. You will not be disqualified if you list Mugglenet.com as one of your favorites... but it will be a tough hurdle to overcome.

    REQUIREMENTS
    • Strong OO design and implementation skills
    • 5+ years of internet development
    • 3+ years of LAMP development

Skills: LAMP, PHP, MySQL, OOP, Agile development, Ecommerce DETAILS
    • Location: San Francisco (North Beach)
    • Start Date: Immediate
    • Job Type: Full-time + benefits
    • Compensation: $100K +

    HOW TO APPLY
Send us your résumé and a cover letter (make sure you read the entire posting – your cover letter will give you away if you didn’t...) to jobs-sf@mercantila-inc.com. Include “World-Class Engineer” in the subject line.
